Al-ula Mosque in Kulonprogo

The spread of Islam in Kulonprogo was marked by some historic mosques built in that region. aside from al Furqon and Trayu mosques in Lendah, in the southern part of Kulonprogo, lies a mosque called Al-Ula, which is claimed as the most ancient one in the area.

Al-ula mosque in Keboan Galur Kulonprogo was given such a name since it was the first mosque built in the region. What makes this mosque different from the others is the historical background, which can be traced through a documentation recorded in nineteen eighty five.

The historic documentation mentions that this mosque was built by Kyai Buang, a soldier of Diponegoro troop who fled from war. After Kyai Buang passed away, he was buried in the front yard of al Ula mosque. After the mosque underwent several renovations and extensions, the grave lies right beneath the mosque. Aside from the four pillars, the mosque has several other legacies such as dome, drum, and chamber. In addition, there is a well believed as a legacy from the past with an immeasurable depth.
