Geblek is a peculiar food of Purworejo. Compared to Lanting, another peculiar cuisine of Purworejo, although similarly made from starch, Geblek is a bit different, in that it is much softer, while Lanting is harder. A roadside stall in Kenteng village, Banyuurip Subdistrict, Purworejo regency, is the center of Geblek making by Mrs Parti, who has occupied Geblek making for more than twenty years. At firs, she was only selling Geblek by the roadside, however, now, the Geblek making is resumed by her daughter, Rian. In one day, Rian can produce fifty kilograms of Geblek. When on the occasion of Lebaran, she can produce up to one hundred and fifty kilograms of Geblek. The ingredients for Geblek making are simple, they are, starch flour, garlic, and salt. In a day, the turnover from the business can reach up to three hundred thousand rupiahs. As for the marketing, raw and cooked Geblek are available for purchase. A package of raw Geblek is priced at twenty thousand rupiahs.
The buyers of Mrs Parti’s Geblek usually comes from within Purworejo city, however, during holidays, many come from other cities, such as Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta. According to a customer, Geblek has a different taste, thus making it a must-buy.
If you are interested to have a taste of Mrs Parti’s Geblek Kenteng, you can come straight away to the roadside stall in Kenteng village, Banyuurip subdistrict, Purworejo regency. Raw Geblek is good for one week, so, for those who come from outside Purworejo should not worry.
