Since the shifting of route of Jogja-Semarang public transports, due to the collapse of Pabelan bridge in Magelang some time ago, passengers of Patas buses serving the route has decreased steeply. The cause is not known for certain, but it has been thought that, the longer trip has caused people to opt for personal vehicle instead.
Since the collapse of Pabelan bridge in Magelang, public transport traffic for Jogja Semarang route has been shifted. Jogja-Semarang economy class buses are diverted to Wates street to Purworejo, and Patas buses are advised to take the eastern route, through Boyolali regency to the north, several Jogja-Semarang Patas bus drivers said that, the shifting of route has caused a steep decline of passengers. This is apparent from the many empty seats in the bus, as well as the quietness of the waiting room in Jombor terminal.
A Semarang-Jogja route Patas bus driver, Sutarno, said that, the lack of passengers also affect the decline of the income of public transport entrepreneurs. Therefore, Sutarno expected that the bridge can be repaired soon, or a temporary bridge can be erected in another site.
Sutarno added that, due to the route diversion, the trip has become much farther, that the fee for Jogja-Semarang Patas bus has to be raised.
