Gremeng cave is one of hundreds of caves in Gunungkidul regency karst area, which is flowed by underground river. Within this cave, there is an abundant water source, capable of irrigating thousands of hectare of field. The beauty of the nature within the cave, is clearly seen when we explored the cave.
Going against the river stream, through steep and dark pathways with only flashlight, are the nature’s challenge to explore Gremeng cave. The fast current of the river, and the density of Stalagtite and Stalagmite become their own hurdles. not only those, bats, and even poisonous snakes are often found between the rocks in the cave.
Gremeng cave, which is located in Blimbing Hamlet, Umbulrejo Ponjong, Gunungkidul, is one of the caves which has underground river with large water discharge rate. The flow can irrigate thousands of hectares of fields in Ponjong Subdistrict. The cave is one point three kilometers long, and is connected with other caves in Umbulrejo. Even in dry season, the water discharge rate of the river reaches twenty liters per second.
The Stalagtites inside the cave are still active and growing, with water that keeps on flowing, even if only drip by drip. The drips contain mineral, calcium carbonate, and phosphate. This is one of the beauties which wards off our fatigue, when enjoying the beauty of natural phenomenon inside the cave.
The Major potential of Gremeng cave, until now, has not been utilized to its utmost. Other than generating underground river spring water, the cave can also be made into an object of research, considering the abundance of natural resources in Gunungkidul. Therefore, the existence of this cave needs attention from many parties, so as to provide more benefit.
