Within the framework of preserving and keeping Javanese culture from extinction, Solo municipal government through department of education, held a Karawitan contest for students, in the student art week event. Although the contestants are still children, they are capable of delivering Karawitan art like a professional artist.

The tune of Gamelan from the various kinds of percussion instruments wafts and sounds rhythmical. dozens of elementary school children are participating in Karawitan contest for elementary students. Despite their tender age, they can be considered skilled at playing the Gamelan set provided by the committee. Each group plays two pieces of music, from Pangkur, and “Tertib Lalu Lintas” as obligatory piece. Not only harmony, but individual skill of each in playing Gamelan is also required.
For most people, playing Gamelan of this kind requires routine training. One of them is Kendang percussion, although it has simple shape, Kendang plays a major role in Gending play. And this child is able to play all kinds of Gamelan through the Kendang.
Aside from Gamelan contest, in the coming week, various contests will still be held, among them are Mocopat, painting, and dance. The event can provide learning facility for people, in keeping javanese traditional arts.
